Fieramosca-class Submarine

The Ettore Fieramosca was to be the lead ship of her class, a large cruiser submarine mounting a large gun and equipped with a seaplane hanger, something along the lines of a smaller Surcouf. The boat was a monumental disappointment in nearly every way. She never mounted the envisioned 8” gun, but rather a 120mm/45. Speeds targets were never achieved, and she handled poorly. The seaplane was never embarked, and the hanger removed eventually. She saw brief service on the declaration of war, but a string of mechanical failures punctuated by a battery explosion put her out of commission permanently.
